NEXRAD ANOMALY: LOW BIRDS

NEXRAD is so sensitive that it is capable of picking up low level bird activity. The above image shows bird activity near the radar site. Low bird activity is characterized by a fuzzy anomaly (as seen above) originating near the radar and then spreading out as the birds leave the area. If the birds are heading only in a certain direction the anomaly may only be seen partially to one side (in the direction the birds are moving).

According to BirdCast (link below), this is particularly common at dawn or dusk though they can occur at any time of the day. Needless to say, the exact behavior and "schedule" will depend on local surroundings and the type of birds in the area.
