NEXRAD ANOMALY: NUCLEAR BLAST

Circular anomalies--often referred to as "blasts" or "nuclear blasts" by meteorologists-- occur when the NEXRAD site is put into test or calibration mode and the radar operator does not switch the radar "offline."

Correct procedure is for the radar operator to switch the radar offline which would result in the No Radar image. However, radar operators will occasionally forget to do this and an anomaly similar to the one above will be seen.

As most radar operators will correctly switch their radar offline before doing calibration, these types of anomalies are generally fairly rare.

Similar blast anomalies, such as the one below, may have a "slice" removed due to the injection of a test signal during the maintenance or calibration. Again, this should normally not be visible since they will normally take the radars offline during such maintenance.
