NEXRAD Anomaly: STARBURSTS

Anomalies such as the "starburst" above are generally caused by internal system malfunctions or component failure such as dirty or bad slip rings, bad signal contacts on the slip rings or noise in the receiver. They are characterized by a pattern of beams radiating out from the radar site along the radials and are generally associated with a constant or increasing power function--that is, the intensity of the return indicated by the the radar is either constant along the entire radial or actually increases with distance from the radar site.

These anomalies are fairly rare.
