USEFUL NEXRAD LINKS
NEXRAD IMAGERY AND DATA LINKS
- NOAA Radar Imagery Directory: This link
explains how to gain access to all NOAA NEXRAD imagery. This is especially useful for
velocity data which is not published in HTML format as is the case for reflectivity imagery.
- NOAA Radar Imagery FTP: This is the NOAA FTP server.
- NOAA: This is the source
of all NEXRAD data right from the National Weather Service at the NOAA. Just click on the
NEXRAD site of interest and you will be able to access its reflectivity, composite, and
other NEXRAD-based products.
- Realtime NEXRAD Animations:
This site at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research provides a
nationwide view of all NEXRAD images. It is neat in that it is constantly updated and
when you move your mouse over a NEXRAD site you will get a thumbnail of the current
imagery from that site and clicking on it will open a full-size view. You can select
the length of the animation loop and whether you want to look at reflectivity imagery,
velocity imagery, or both.
- NEXRAD Image Archive:
This site from UCAR (same as previous link) is a database of NEXRAD images from the last
month. You can specify the site, date, start time, and loop duration you wish to view.
- NOAA NEXRAD Image Archive:
Provides historic NEXRAD data. The images are daily prior to 1997 and hourly after 1997.
- Mexican Radars: Images from the 12
Doppler radars throughout Mexico.
ARCHIVED NEXRAD DATA AND VIEWING LINKS
- NOAA Level III Radar Archive: This link lets you
request historic "Level III" radar data from the NOAA for any given NEXRAD site. You can then
use the software on the link below to convert the Level III radar data to a viewable image
such as GIF or PNG.
- LibNNids Level III Software: Converts NOAA Level III data
to common formats such as PNG, GIF and overlays maps, etc. Source code available and works for
both Windows and Linux.
RADAR INFORMATION & DATA INTERPRETATION MATERIAL
- Radar Notes: Information
about interpreting radar data.
- Radar Refresher:
Excellent slideshow presentation from Steve Davis at the Milwaukee/Sullivan NWS
office. Demonstrates how NEXRAD/Doppler works and talks about tracking and identifying
storms and detecting tornados. Very comprehensive, excellent!
- Radar Meteorology: Very
good explanation of radars, especially NEXRAD, how they work and how to interpret them.
- WeatherMatrix: A very good, general-interest
website for weather watchers, storm chasers, etc. Also has a good section on NEXRAD.
- Weather Surveillance Radar: Good technical
information about various types of weather radar, including NEXRAD.
SERVICES
- UniSys Weather: Free service provides access
to NEXRAD imagery, satellite, infrared satellite, and forecasts using various models.
- WeatherTap: Provides weather software and services
for $6.95/month. Includes NEXRAD imagery, satellite, infrared satellite, and lightning data and
provides different methods of presenting the data. Not clear why someone would want to pay for this
since it seems they are displaying the same data as is available for free. Even
this meteorologist
says there's no reason to pay for weather information.
